A Minecraft AI companion is an AI-powered character that plays alongside you: it understands what you say, talks back, helps out and, in the best case, builds things and remembers your time together. In Craftinator, an AI Minecraft server for Java and Bedrock Edition, every player gets their own flying AI companion that flies at your side from the moment you join. This guide explains what it does and how to get the most out of it, with notes for parents at the end.
Craftinator is in early access sign-up and not launched yet, so this describes how the companion is designed to work.
What a Minecraft AI companion is in Craftinator
Your companion is not a tamed wolf or a villager with a few fixed lines. It is driven by an AI language model, so it understands normal sentences and decides how to answer or what to build.
You don't install anything to get one. You join Craftinator with your normal Minecraft client, on PC, console or phone, and your companion is already there. There are no mods and no commands to learn: you just talk to it.
It does four main things:
- Talks with you by voice or text.
- Builds what you describe.
- Helps with questions, tips and stories.
- Remembers what you built and lived through together.
Talk to it by voice or text, in your language
You can speak to your companion by voice or type in chat, whichever is easier at the moment. It works in many languages, so you can talk to it in the language you think in. That is a big help for younger players, for families where English is not the first language, and for anyone who finds typing slow on a console or phone.
There is no special format. Ask the way you would ask a friend:
Hey, what should I build on this hill?
Remember the cave I found yesterday? Tell me a story about it.
It builds for you
Your companion is also your builder. Describe what you want, and it plans the build, the server checks it, and the blocks appear, usually within seconds. The server checks that the build is in your area, leaves other players' builds alone and is a sensible size.
Build a cozy spruce cabin with a stone chimney right next to me.
Paint that chicken blue.
Build a giant Death Star floating above the ocean.
If it is not quite right, say so: "make it taller" or "use dark oak instead." It goes beyond structures too. You can invent new blocks, objects and creatures with their own properties, behavior and physics, and turn ideas into quests, stories, dungeons and minigames. For phrasing tips, see the Minecraft AI builder guide, and for games, the AI minigames and dungeons guide.
Help, tips and stories
Not every moment is about building. Your companion is a friend that talks back:
- Answers questions: how a block works, what to do next, how to start a farm.
- Gives tips when you are stuck or want to try something new.
- Tells stories, including ones about your own world and adventures.
- Just chats, when you want company while you explore or mine.
Like any AI, it can sometimes be wrong, so treat its answers as helpful suggestions and try things out.
It sees and reacts to what's around you
Your companion is not a chat window floating outside the game. It sees what is happening around you and reacts to it. That means you can point at your surroundings instead of describing everything in detail: "this river," "that hill," "the tower behind me."
It also makes conversations feel natural. You can ask about the place you are standing in, talk about what just happened, or ask for ideas that fit the spot you are in. Because the companion flies at your side, it is always part of the scene rather than a voice from somewhere else.
It remembers what you built together
A companion that forgets everything after each message feels like a tool. Craftinator's companion remembers what you talked about, what you built and moments you lived through together. Over time, that turns it from a helper into a teammate who knows your world:
- It knows which castle is yours and what you added last time.
- It can pick up a conversation where you left it.
- It can bring up adventures you shared, which makes its stories and suggestions more personal.
Your builds are also kept safe. Everything is saved automatically in Craftinator's database, on server backups and optionally on your own Google Drive. Builds are grief-proof: other players can admire them but can't break, steal or change them. All of it lives in one giant shared world, so you and your companion can visit friends and their companions too. The AI Minecraft server guide explains how this works end to end.
Tips for parents
The companion is friendly and patient, which is why kids like it. It is still AI, so a few simple rules help:
- No personal information. Kids should not tell the companion or other players their full name, address, school, phone number or passwords.
- It is AI, not a person. Talk with younger kids about the difference between a friendly AI character and a real friend.
- AI can be wrong. Treat facts and advice as suggestions.
- A parent manages AI costs. AI usage runs on Craftinator credits or on your own AI provider key (BYOK). With BYOK, the parent creates the key, sets a spending limit with the provider and keeps it out of chat and screenshots.
- Builds are protected. Grief protection and automatic saving mean a child's work is not wrecked or lost.
- Play together first. Join for the first session and see how your child and the companion get along.
Craftinator is built by Karel & Karel, a dad and his 13-year-old son who plays Minecraft every day and outgrew the server he ran with friends. If you want a companion of your own when it opens, join the early access.
Craftinator is not an official Minecraft product and is not approved by or associated with Mojang or Microsoft.
