Play Minecraft With AI: An AI Friend That Plays Alongside You

If you want to play Minecraft with AI, the most natural way is not a menu or a tool window. It is a friend who is in the world with you. In Craftinator, a Minecraft server for Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, every player gets their own flying AI companion that flies at your side, talks with you, builds what you ask and remembers what you did together. This guide is about what a normal play session looks like with an AI friend next to you, alone or with your real friends.

Craftinator is in early access sign-up and not launched yet, so everything here describes how it is designed to work. You can join the early access to be among the first players.

What playing Minecraft with AI feels like

Most people imagine "Minecraft with AI players" as bots that wander around on their own. Craftinator takes a different approach. Your companion is your partner: it stays with you, pays attention to what you are doing and reacts to it.

It sees what is happening around you, so you can say "this valley" or "that ruined tower" instead of giving coordinates. You talk to it by voice or by typing in chat, in many languages, and it answers like a friend would. When you want something built, you describe it and it appears within seconds.

There are no mods and no commands to learn. You join with your normal Minecraft client and your companion is already there. For the basics of who the companion is, see the Minecraft AI companion guide.

Exploring together

An AI friend makes a long trip feel less lonely. Talk about what you see, ask what something is, or ask for ideas that fit the place you just found.

What would be a cool thing to build on top of this cliff?

Tell me a short legend about the old ruins we just walked past.

I'm lost. Help me think about how to find my way back to my base.

Because the companion remembers what you talked about and the moments you lived through together, the places you discover become part of a shared story. Next session, you can ask it about "the cave with the lava waterfall" and it knows what you mean.

Building side by side

Building is the part most players try first. Instead of placing every block by hand, you describe the idea and your companion builds it with you. You stay in charge: you choose the spot, the style and the size, and you refine it until it looks right.

Build a small stone watchtower here with a ladder inside.

Make the roof steeper and use dark oak.

Behind the scenes, the companion understands your request with an AI language model, plans the build, and the server checks it before placing anything: that it is in your area, that it leaves other players' builds alone and that it is a sensible size.

You can also go further than normal blocks. Craftinator lets you invent new blocks, objects and creatures with their own behavior and physics, described in one sentence. The how to build with AI guide covers good phrasing in detail.

Help in survival

Survival is where a patient friend who knows the game is handy. Your companion is a friend that talks back: it answers questions, gives tips and helps you plan when things go wrong.

  • Ask what to prioritize on your first night.
  • Ask for farm ideas when food is running low.
  • Ask for help planning a shelter, then have it build one you like.

It's getting dark and I only have wood and some cobblestone. What should I do first?

Like any AI, it can sometimes be wrong, so treat its advice as a smart suggestion and test it in your world.

Playing solo vs with friends

Solo, the companion turns a quiet single-player style session into a conversation. It keeps you company while you mine, suggests next goals, tells stories and helps you finish big projects that would take ages alone. You always have someone to play with, even late at night.

With friends, everyone has their own companion, and you all share one giant shared world built to hold millions of players. That opens up fun ways to play together:

  • Each friend asks their companion for part of a base, and you connect them.
  • One player designs a quest or dungeon, the others play it. See the AI minigames and dungeons guide.
  • You trade what you made in a real, stable economy designed to stay balanced long-term.

Builds are grief-proof: what you create is yours, and other players can admire it but can't break, steal or change it. If you are picking a place to play as a group, the servers to play with friends guide has more ideas.

Your adventures are remembered and saved

Two kinds of memory matter when you play Minecraft with AI.

First, the companion's memory: it remembers what you built and what you lived through together, so it can pick up a conversation where you left it and make stories and suggestions more personal.

Second, your world: nothing is lost. Everything is saved automatically in Craftinator's database, on server backups and optionally on your own Google Drive. A long project with your AI friend does not disappear because a laptop broke.

Tips for parents

An AI friend is easy for kids to like, so a few simple habits help:

  • Keep personal information out of chat: no full name, address, school, phone number or passwords, whether talking to the companion or other players.
  • Explain that it is AI. It is friendly, but it is not a person.
  • A parent handles AI costs. AI usage runs on Craftinator credits or your own AI provider key (BYOK). With BYOK, the parent creates the key, sets a spending limit with the provider and keeps it private.
  • Play the first session together to see how your child uses the companion.

Craftinator is built by Karel & Karel, a dad and his 13-year-old son who plays Minecraft every day and outgrew the server he ran with friends. If that sounds like your kind of game, join the early access.

Craftinator is not an official Minecraft product and is not approved by or associated with Mojang or Microsoft.
